Hackers usually send e-mails asking for a wire transfer, supposedly from a location where a client claims he or she can’t be reached by phone. “Call [the client] and don’t leave a voicemail,” Steinberg said. “Talk to somebody live about the request. That alone stops 90%” of fraud attempts.

“If they hack you, they hack your clients,” Steinberg said. “You’ve got to protect your home as much as your office.”

He suggested several tips: Use a content filter to keep your computer from logging onto unsafe sites; do not click on links in emails; run firewalls, including on phones; avoid wi-fi hotspots—a 3G or 4G cell connection is safest; don’t buy opened electronic gear or from EBay sellers—it may be compromised; use password managers; be careful of phone applications, especially ones that ask for access to information they shouldn’t need; and update and patch all devices.
