America’s least-funded school systems are located in states where high school students are least prepared for college, according to WalletHub. And Covid-19 only made things worse.

To determine the worst-performing public school systems in America, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across two key dimensions of “Quality” and “Safety” by evaluating 32 relevant metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest quality of public K-12 education. WalletHub then determined the weighted average of each state and the District of Columbia across all metrics to calculate its overall score and rank order.

Here, in ascending order, are the 10 states that scored the worst in WalletHub's study:

10. Alabama

The state ranks 43rd in school spending. Alabama ranks first for lowest dropout rate, but 48th for lowest reading test scores and 51st for lowest math test scores. Alabama ranks 23rd in Safety and 45th in Quality. Total Score: 39.81 out of 100.
