It's important to keep in mind the goal of a smooth and equitable solution. "Dividing assets doesn't have to be a zero-sum game where one spouse's gain is the other's loss," Munro pointed out. "There are many outcomes that can be positive for both spouses. Indeed, anything that helps the family reach a speedy resolution is desirable to save on costs and heartache."

It's a good idea to work with an attorney. "Our role is to provide plan-based models for the division of assets, to give a frame of reference," said Munro. "Model which scenarios are worth fighting for, and which situations wouldn’t move the needle materially."

Overall, keep your cool. "Remain as neutral and compassionate as possible—listening to and empathizing with your client while maintaining a professional stance," said Munro.
