Winter is a magical time to travel, especially when you're embarking on a ski vacation. And Forbes has come out with its current ranking of top ski resorts just in time for the snow to fall.

Earlier versions of this list use the "Pure Awesomeness Factor" or "PAF" to rank its top resorts. Forbes contributing writer Christopher Steiner of ZRankings, which created the PAF warns, “Heed the PAF. It guides all skiers toward enlightenment.”

The PAF evaluates a ski resort’s terrain, snow profile (quantity, quality, dependability), town ambience, ease of travel, lodging base, acreage, continuous vertical, plus the personal experiences of the crew.

What can you expect on the ski slopes this year? According to ZRankings, Colorado had a great year with snow falling through April; Utah’s patrons at the Sundance Film Festival were buried in 40 inches; and Jackson Hole is proving to deliver quality snow for holiday ski vacations.
