A new global ranking has identified the universities that do the best job at teaching business and economics.
The 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings assessed 585 universities that have at least 5 percent of its academic staff or at least 50 academic staff in the business/economics discipline.
The leading institutions in business and management, accountant and finance, and economics an econometrics were scored by factors including student enrollment, student and staff ratio, and percentage of international students.
The following universities, in ascending order, were deemed the best in the world in the business/economics area:
10. University of Pennsylvania
Penn’s Wharton School offers programs in economics, accounting and finance. The ratio of students to staff is 6 to 4.
9. Yale University
With an enrollment of 12, 318, the female to male student ratio is 50/50. Yale’s School of Management students have two staff members per every five students. This is the first time Yale has been included in the ranking.
8. London School of Economics and Political Science
George Soros and Mick Jagger both attended the London School of Economics and Political Science. Seventy percent of the student body is international students. This is the debut for the London School in the ranking.
7. Harvard University
Harvard has a 9-to-1 student to staff ratio. Former U.S. president George W. Bush and financial executives Jamie Dimon and Ray Dalio all attended Harvard Business School.
6. University of California-Berkeley
With 36,468 full-time students, U.C.-Berkeley has a 13-to-2 student to faculty ratio.
5. Duke University
This is the university's first appearance in this top 10 list. The Fuqua School of Business graduates include Apple CEO Tim Cook and NBA head coach Quin Snyder of the Utah Jazz.
4. University of Cambridge
Cambridge Judge Business School offers a one-year MBA degree and finance and entrepreneurship programs. Notable alumni include scientists Stephen Hawking and Charles Darwin, and author A.A. Milne.
3. University of Oxford
Oxford is home to the Said Business School. Former U.K. prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, and former U.S. president Bill Clinton attended the school.
2. Stanford University
Discount broker Charles Schwab and General Motors CEO Mary T. Barra attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
MIT rose to the top spot this year, overtaking Stanford. The school has an 8 to 7 student to staff ration and 34 percent of its student body comprises international students.
