Coast to coast, college tuition is on the rise for the 2017-2018 school year. Attending college is more expensive than ever, with Americans owing more than $1 trillion dollars in student loan debt, according to Business Insider. 

Over the last 20 years, the average tuition and fees at private universities jumped 157 percent, while out-of-state tuition and fees grew by 194 percent, according to U.S News and World Report.

The average cost of tuition and fees for the 2016–2017 school year was $33,480 at private colleges, $9,650 for state residents at public colleges and $24,930 for out-of-state residents attending public universities, according to the College Board.

This year, tuition is increasing by 3.6 percent on average at the top 50 schools and several colleges have increased their tuition rates as much as 4 percent, according to USA Today.
