While many, if not most, Bogleheads do not retain a financial advisor, they have created dense local and online communities where they share information and advice they have researched themselves. The Bogleheads movement celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018.

In its February 7 investor communication, Vanguard issued five pieces of advice to its clients to help them weather volatility:

  • Stay diversified.
  • Tune out the noise.
  • Control what you can—costs.
  • Revisit your asset allocation.
  • Set realistic expectations.

On February 5, Don Bennyhoff, a senior investment analyst with the Vanguard Investment Strategy Group, acknowledged in another investor bulletin that sometimes third-party advice is necessary to protect investors from themselves.

“Investing is hard. It’s emotional. You have a lot at stake. Getting a more objective perspective from someone who’s at arm’s length from your portfolio can help you make more rational decisions,” wrote Bennyhoff.
