“Outside of the ‘Varsity Blues’ context, the concept that a bribe can be a payment to the victim is without any precedent anywhere in the United States,” Abdelaziz’s lawyers said in their filing.

The government opposes the two men’s efforts to remain free pending their appeals. Its response to their requests is due by April 18.

The appellate cases are No. 22-1138 for Wilson and No. 22-1129 for Abdelaziz, First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (Boston). The trial court case is U.S. v. Colburn et al., 19-cr-10080, U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts (Boston).
