Scamsters conducting fake online job interviews to steal victims' money are proliferating, warned the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in an investor alert Thursday.

“Terminate the call immediately if you are asked to provide personal or financial information, or to pay a fee that you did not expect,” the alert cautions.

Another warning the interviewer is a fraud, said Finra, is when a request is made for documents or files to be downloaded.

“Files may contain malware that captures keystrokes or mouse movements, or that even takes control of your webcam,” the regulatory agency pointed out.

Other tell-tale signs a scamster is behind the job interview are: language -- spoken or written -- that suggests a job is “guaranteed” or “waiting for you”; pressure to commit to a job quickly; and odd or poorly written text on the online video platform page or in other communications, according to the alert.

Some of the scamsters are pretending to be a range of legitimate organizations -- including Finra itself.
