11-month-old Maverick Steele with his parents Andrew and Taylor Steele stand next to a check for $529 at the Wake Forest versus University of North Carolina men's basketball game.

Right before the end of 2017, North Carolina’s National College Savings Program, NC 529, released its winner of the Diapers to Dorms Dash during the men’s basketball game between Wake Forest and the University of North Carolina.

Eleven-month-old Maverick Steele from Chapel Hill, N.C., beat four other babies in a race for a contribution of $529 toward an NC 529 account.

The event was an effort to raise awareness of 529s with parents and grandparents. NC 529 said it was surprised that most of the participants were versed in what a 529 is before the event. According to a representative, some of the parents already had an NC 529 account.

The program took the idea from NBA games and other state 529s like Virginia529, which has held its Diaper Derby for the past four years throughout the state of Virginia.

According to Scott Ridgely, director of marketing and communications for Virginia529, the organization just had its biggest December ever for 529 registrations; it opened over 10,000 accounts.

When asked whether tax reform was a contributing factor, he said it was too early to determine.

According to a representative from NC 529, it will host another event later in January and it expects to have double the number of entries the first event did.
