The College for Financial Planning plans to offer a certification program that focuses on the special needs of senior citizen clients.
The Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) designation is available as a three-day classroom course, a self-study program or an online program. The program will be available starting in August.
The program focuses on the financial planning needs of clients between the ages of 50 and 70-an age group that will represent 20% of the nation's population within the next 25 years, according to the college.
Course work will place an emphasis on building an advisor practice and how to market to seniors.
Topics include trends in aging, chronic illness, long-term care issues, end-of-life, tax and estate planning, senior housing and Social Security and Medicaid issues, according to the college. The program will also cover the spiritual and social aspects of aging.
The classroom course, which includes a proctored exam, is offered in more than two dozen U.S. and Canadian cities. The self-study and online programs give candidates up to six months to complete the required course work.
