A 25-year Merrill Lynch financial advisor was fired yesterday after being arrested for launching into a racist tirade and tossing a drink at a worker in a smoothie shop.

According to published reports, the incident happened on Saturday afternoon when James Iannazzo, 48, bought a smoothie at Robeks on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield, Conn. NBC News and other news outlets reported that police said Iannazzo called 911 from his home for a child having an allergic reaction to peanuts. The child was taken to a local hospital.

The Connecticut Post reported that Iannazzo then returned to the store and confronted employees. Iannazzo can be seen on a three-minute video, filmed by an employee, and posted on TikTok, demanding to know who had made the smoothie. The video, which is under the username @cjjbreezy., has been viewed by millions.

When the employees could not give him an answer as to who made the smoothie, Iannazzo became increasingly irate. At one point, he called the workers “stupid ignorant high school kids” and “immigrant losers.”

The workers repeatedly asked Iannazzo to leave and threatened to call the police, but he became more charged and can be heard shouting multiple obscenities. He even flung the smoothie at a worker, hitting her and soiling her clothing. One worker could be heard in the background calling the police.

Published reports said he left the scene prior to police arrival but was identified shortly after. He turned himself in without incident.

Merrill Lynch spokesman Bill Halldin said Iannazzo has been fired. “Our company does not tolerate behavior of this kind. We immediately investigated and have taken action. This individual is no longer employed at our firm,” he wrote in an email.

Iannazzo’s lawyer, Frank J. Riccio, said in a Twitter post on Sunday that his client had "stressed to the [store] staff" that his son had a peanut allergy and requested a drink without peanuts.

"His receipt acknowledged that the order should not contain peanut butter," Riccio wrote. After drinking the smoothie, the son had a “severe allergic reaction” and was taken to the hospital by ambulance, he wrote.

“When faced with a dire situation for his son, Mr. Iannazzo’s parental instinct kicked in and he acted out of anger and fear,” the lawyer wrote. “He is not a racist individual and deeply regrets his statements and actions during a moment of extreme emotional stress.”

According to the police report, Iannazzo asked that the drink be made without peanut butter, but never told the shop’s workers about his son’s allergy, Bloomberg News reported. Employees repeatedly told Iannazzo to leave, but he stayed and continued yelling insults, according to the police. He also tried to open a locked door to a staff-only area. He left before officers arrived and later turned himself in.

He was charged with intimidation based on bigotry or bias, trespassing and breaching the peace, according to the police. A court appearance was set for Feb. 7.

According to his BrokerCheck profile, Iannazzo has only been registered with Merrill Lynch and has been there since November 1996. Iannazzo appeared on the Barron’s Top 1,200 advisors by state list five years in a row. He was ranked No. 24 in Connecticut in 2021 by Forbes.

This is the second time that a TikTok video has gotten a financial advisor axed for hurling racist remarks. In August, LPL severed ties with Eileen Law Cure, after she was heard telling her staff to stop wasting her time with black candidates and that she will not interview them.
