Eight college teams will compete in the 2017 Financial Planning Challenge at the Financial Planning Association’s annual conference in Nashville, Tenn., in October.

The competition, sponsored by the FPA, Ameriprise Financial and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards is designed to encourage the next generation of financial planners.

The following schools are competing in the final round:

• California State University, Northridge
• Texas A&M University
• Texas Tech University
• University of Akron
• University of Georgia
• University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana
• Utah Valley University
• Winthrop University

The teams are made up of college and university finance undergraduate students. The first two stages of the three-stage competition are modeled after the CFP Board’s Financial Plan Development Course requirements. The teams write financial planning case studies and then present them at the conference. In the final round, which also takes place at the conference, the students participate in a game-show style financial planning knowledge contest.
The top three winning teams receive monetary scholarships for their schools.
